The No. 7 USC men’s tennis team made a singles surge in the first round of ITA National Indoor Championship action to beat No. 10 seed North Carolina 4-1 today in Chicago. The Trojans dropped the doubles point but rebounded with singles wins from Stefan Dostanic, Wojtek Marek, Ryan Colby and Peter Makk. The Trojans advance to tomorrow’s quarterfinals where they’ll meet No. 2 seed Kentucky.
UNC jumped out to an early lead on courts two and three in doubles, but the Trojans battled to keep their hopes of hauling in the doubles point alive. On center court, the No. 37 ranked UNC duo of Casey Kania and Ryan Seggerman came out on top with a 7-6(1) decision over No. 12 Bradley Frye and Stefan Dostanic. On court two, Wojtek Marek and Lodewijk Weststrate fell to Tar Heels Cernoch/Kittay 6-4, giving UNC the doubles point. Action on court three was suspended.
In singles, however, USC manufactured a potend turnaround, sparked by #35 senior Stefan Dostanic’s 6-1, 6-4 win on center court over #59 Brian Cernoch. At the No. 3 spot, No. __ Wojtek Marek defeated Will Jansen with a 6-1, 6-4 decision to put the Trojans on top. USC sophomore Ryan Colby scored next, beating UNC’s Chris Li 6-2, 6-4. The match was decided on court two as #34 Peter Makk won in fight on fashion, defeating #19 Ryan Seggerman 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 to send the Trojans to the quarterfinals.
Up next, Troy will face Kentucky tomorrow in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship quarterfinals. Time is still TBD.
SCOUTING KENTUCKY
No. 2 Kentucky advanced to the second round of ITA Indoors after defeating No. 15 Florida. The Wildcats are 10-0 so far this season. Multiple Wildcats made the national rankings, including No. 16 Joshua Lapadat, No. 45 Liam Draxl, No. 57 Charlelie Cosnet, No. 66 Alafia Ayeni, and No. 115 Taha Baadi. The Trojans are 8-3 all time against the Wildcats.
