No. 23 Sun Devils Gearing up for Midweek Battle Against SMU


TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 23 Sun Devil Women’s Tennis team will look to keep their hot-streak alive at the Whiteman Tennis Center this week when SMU comes to town on Wednesday, February 8 (1 p.m. MST).

The Sun Devils and Mustangs were originally slated to play on Friday, February 3, but weather conditions in the Dallas area prevented SMU from traveling to Tempe.

After Wednesday’s showdown with the Mustangs, the Sun Devils won’t return to Whiteman until March 4 against Baylor, which will kick off a three-match homestand.

SUN DEVIL NOTABLES

  • The Sun Devils are listed at No. 23 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Top 25 rankings, marking the fourth consecutive week they’ve held a national ranking.
  • A perfect 6-0 at home this spring, the Sun Devils are recently removed from their first win over a ranked opponent this spring after beating No. 17 San Diego (5-2) on February 4.
  • Four Sun Devils have earned individual national rankings in the ITA’s preseason polls –  Giulia Morlet (No. 69), Domenika Turkovic (No. 74), Marianna Argyrokastriti (No. 84) and Sedona Gallagher (No. 95). Turkovic/Patricija Spaka are listed as the No. 9 ranked doubles team in the country. The next player rankings are set to be released just hours before the Sun Devils meet the Mustangs on February 8.
  • Freshman Chelsea Fontenel has quickly burst onto the scene and has settled into singles Court 3 and is a team-best 7-0 this season.
  • Chasing 600: With the Sun Devils’ 5-2 win over No. 17 San Diego last weekend, Sheila McInerney earned the 564th win of her illustrious 39th-year career.

PREVIEWING SMU (3-2)

  • The Mustangs split the two matches they played in the recent ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament, falling to Wisconsin (4-2) before beating VCU (4-0) the following day. They haven’t been in action since late January given their weather cancelations.
  • SMU is led by fourth-year head coach Jeff Nevolo, who guided the Mustangs to a 15-9 campaign last spring.
