ORLANDO, Fla. – No. 20 ranked Domenika Turkovic/Patricija Spaka were bested by No. 8 Reese Brantmeier/Elizabeth Scotty (North Carolina), 6-0, 7-5, in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Doubles Championships on Wednesday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.

The loss officially ends the 2023 campaign for the Sun Devils after a 35th consecutive run to the NCAA Tournament and the second consecutive NCAA Doubles Championship appearance for Turkovic/Spaka.

After a flat first set in which the Tar Heels won 6-0, the Sun Devils dug in and went to work against Brantmeier/Scotty. They countered every Tar Heel punch, never falling behind more than two games in the set until it was 7-5.

Despite Wednesday’s loss, Turkovic/Spaka are the first Sun Devils to have advanced beyond the opening round since No. 12 Ilze Hattingh/Lauryn John-Baptiste had a top-eight finish in 2018.

Just one win away from a quarterfinals appearance, the Sun Devil tandem was one of the country’s most touted doubles teams all year, ranking as high as No. 7 in early February.
