No. 20 NC State comes up short versus No. 3 Texas


RALEIGH NC State nearly pulled off a big upset, pushing No. 3 Texas to the final match before eventually falling, 4-3.
 
The Wolfpack (10-5) and Longhorns (13-2) went down to the last match before a winner was determined.
 
Nevin Arimilli edged NC State’s Fons Van Sambeek to secure the win for Texas. 
 
The Longhorns are now 4-2 all-time against the Wolfpack. 
 
Doubles (NC State 1, Texas 0)
 
NC State took the first doubles match, 6-3, when Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli pulled off a win over Eliot Spizzirri and Cleeve Harper. The Longhorns took the second match, but Braden Shick and Van Sambeek won the tiebreaker. 
 
Singles (NC State 4, Texas 2)
 
The highlight early in the singles was Rafa Izquierdo Luque knocking off No. 1 Eliot Spizzirri. Izquierdo Luque won the first set, 6-2, before falling 3-6 in the second. NC State took two of the first three sets against the Longhorns, including Staeheli’s 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 18 Siem Woldeab.
 
Texas would even the score, winning in the No. 5 and 3 singles, setting up a winner take all in the No. 6 matchup.
 
Nevin Arimilli won the first set, 6-3, before Van Sambeek won 6-4 in the second. Van Sambeek took a 6-5 lead in the third set, before Arimilli eventually battled back for the 7-6 win.
