TUCSON, Ariz. – The Wildcats remain undefeated at home after another huge win against University of San Diego on Sunday, Feb. 5 at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
It was a fierce doubles competition against the Toreros that resulted in the Cats claiming the point after an hour of play. At two doubles, Jared Horwood and Colton Smith were first to finish with a 6-4 win against Oliver Tarvet and Lambert Ruland. It was neck and neck on courts one and three where both matches went to tiebreakers. Jonas Ziverts and Jay Friend upset Sacchitt Sharma and Iiro Vasa 7-6(3) to get it done for Arizona.

The Wildcats fought hard in singles, taking three points to ensure the win over USD. First off the courts was #117 Gustaf Strom who defeated Marvin Schaber 6-4, 6-2 – the only Wildcat to win in straight sets today. Then the Cats suffered two losses making the overall score 2-2. #85 Smith won his first set 7-5 against #68 Vasa before falling 3-6, 4-6 in the last two. At six singles, Iñaki Cabrera-Bello also won his first set (6-0) but ultimately came up short 4-6, 0-6.
#78 Friend put Arizona back in the lead after an intense match at five singles. The freshman was down 2-5 in the third set against Stian Klaassen then saved four match points to reach a tiebreaker where he came out victorious 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(5). And clinching for the Cats at one singles was #19 Ziverts who defeated Oliver Tarvet 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Men’s Tennis is now 5-1 in regular season play, undefeated at home and ranked No. 17 in the ITA polls. They are on the road next week for two ranked matchups: No. 11 Baylor on Friday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. MST and No. 6 Texas on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. MST.
