ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women’s tennis team cruised to a 4-0 win over Iowa on Wednesday (March 15) at the Varsity Tennis Center. It is the second straight shutout of a Big Ten opponent as the Wolverines improved to 10-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.

The Wolverines took the early lead with the doubles point, winning at No. 2 and No. 1 within seconds of each other to clinch the point. Merri Kelly and Andrea Cerdan won the last four games to take a 6-2 match at No. 3. The No. 2-ranked pair of Kari Miller and Jaedan Brown fell behind 4-3 at No. 1 doubles but rallied with three straight points to take the match 6-4. On the next court, Julia Fliegner and Lily Jones secured a 6-4 victory with their third consecutive win.

Kelly quickly pushed Michigan ahead 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Pia Kranholdt at No. 6 singles. Kelly won 10 consecutive games in impressive fashion.

Gala Mesochoritou earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Barbora Pokorna at No. 5 as the No. 118-ranked player improved to 12-5 overall.

Miller clinched the team victory with 6-3, 6-0 scores over Marisa Schmidt at No. 1 singles to remain unbeaten at the top position.

Michigan is back in action on Friday (March 17), heading to Lincoln to battle Nebraska at 11 a.m. CDT.
