Miami Sweeps Midweek Doubleheader – University of Miami Athletics

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team went a perfect 2-0 Wednesday when it defeated South Alabama and College of Charleston in a mid-week doubleheader.

As a team, Miami posted a 7-2 record in singles action and a 2-2 mark in doubles play. Freshman Antonio Prat was the only Hurricane to tally a pair of singles victories, while graduate student Leo Bierbaum stayed perfect in dual match singles play, boasting an 8-0 record this spring.

The Hurricanes began the day with a 4-3 comeback victory over South Alabama. The Jaguars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point and extended their lead to 2-0 with a victory at fourth singles.

No. 44 Dan Martin cut the South Alabama lead in half with Miami’s first singles victory of the day, a 6-3, 6-3 win on court one. Prat tied the match at two-all after rallying to win 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 at third singles, but South Alabama responded with a victory on court two to retake the lead, 3-2.

The Florida heat got to the Jaguars’ Martin Bugaj and he ultimately retired on court five, giving Bierbaum the 5-7, 6-3, 2-1 victory and retying the match at 3-3.

With the match on the line, freshman Nacho Serra Sanchez remained unphased, dominating his three-set battle against South Alabama’s Javier Montoya to the tune of a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win.

Miami carried its winning ways into the afternoon session, tallying the doubles point against College of Charleston thanks to a pair of victories at second and third doubles.

Martin and Prat handily defeated Brolin Dorsey and Johnny Wang, 6-2, on court two, while sophomore Martin Katz and Serra Sanchez ground out a 7-6 (6) tiebreak victory over Matias Gaedechens and Jordyn Larke at third doubles.

With the doubles point in hand, Miami went to work in singles action, quickly extending its lead to 3-0 when Prat and fifth-year senior Franco Aubone each recorded 6-4, 6-1 victories on courts two and five, respectively.

Katz clinched the match for the Hurricanes, defeating Noah Borges, 6-4, 6-2, at third singles. While play was stopped upon clinching, Martin, Serra Sanchez and freshman Jackson Armistead were all leading in their respective matches.

The Hurricanes hit the road for their second ACC road trip of the season, traveling to the state of North Carolina to take on NC State and Wake Forest on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
