Men's Tennis Wins At No. 40 Notre Dame, 4-2

NOTRE DAME, IND.—Karl Poling won the clinching match as 10th-ranked North Carolina picked up a key ACC men’s tennis road victory at No. 40 Notre Dame on Friday afternoon at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.

The Tar Heels won the doubles point for the sixth consecutive match and the 11th time in 13 outings this season. After starting with the resulting, 1-0 lead, Will Jansen, Brian Cernoch and Poling won their singles matches.

With the win, UNC improved to 9-4 overall this season and 2-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference dual match play. Notre Dame dropped to 8-5, 0-1.

Carolina got a 6-2 win by Jansen and Poling at No. 2 doubles over Matthew Che and Jean-Marc Malkowski and a 6-4 win at No. 3 by Casey Kania and Peter Murphy over Evan Lee and Yu Zhang to take a 1-0 lead to start the afternoon.

For the second match in a row, UNC played without graduate student Ryan Seggerman, its usual No. 2 singles player, due to soreness. Also for the second consecutive match, Carolina adjusted its lineup with a next-man-up sensibility and earned an ACC victory. Last Sunday, the Tar Heels beat Boston College, 6-1, at home.

Ranked No. 112 in singles, Jansen gave the Tar Heels a 2-0 advantage on Friday when he cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win over Malkowski at No. 2.

The Fighting Irish cut the lead to 2-1 with a straight-set win over Murphy at No. 6 singles, but Cernoch continued his strong season by beating No. 38 Sebastian Dominko, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 1 singles. The three-time All-America improved to 8-4 in singles play this spring, including 7-3 at No. 1 as a team captain for the second year in a row.

Notre Dame won its second match of the day at No. 4 over Anuj Watane before Poling clinched the win at No. 3.

Carolina will return to action on Sunday at noon at No. 20 Louisville before returning home to host Wofford next Sunday March 12 in Chapel Hill.
