Men’s Tennis Set for ITA Kickoff Weekend

WACO, Texas – Arizona State men’s tennis starts their 2023 away slate with a trip to Waco, Texas, for the ITA Kickoff Weekend featuring Baylor, Florida State, and San Diego. The Sun Devils will play the host, Baylor, on Friday at 5:00 p.m. MST before taking the court on Saturday against either Florida State or San Diego at the Hurd Tennis Center. The matches will stream live via Cracked Racquets’ YouTube channel, with live stats available via the ITA’s Kickoff Homepage.

ITA Kickoff Weekend

The ITA Kickoff Weekend is hosted by 15 men’s teams and 15 women’s teams in the country to help launch the 2023 NCAA season.

ASU @ Baylor: Friday, 5:00 p.m.

ASU vs. Florida State or San Diego: Saturday, TBD (1:00 p.m. OR 5:00 p.m.)

Sun Devils Start Strong

The Sun Devils opened the season with a pair of hidden duals against Illinois Thursday and Friday to get their rackets up to speed. They then hosted Wichita State and Bryant. Head coach Matt Hill and the squad started the year 2-0 following respective 4-1 and 4-0 victories over the Shockers and Bulldogs. Newcomer Roi Ginat and second-year Sun Devil Jacob Bullard both went undefeated across the matches, with Bullard sweeping his opponents in straight sets.

Scouting the Opponent

Baylor’s men’s tennis team enters the match as the No. 11 ranked team in the nation. The Bears dropped a 4-0 contest to No. 1 Virginia (4-0) last Sunday. The loss marked the Bears’ first of the season. Third-year head coach Michael Woodson, who has a 63-9 record, has a blend of experience and youth, with the upperclassmen trio of Finn Bass, Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi and Tadeas Paroulek ready to move up in the lineup and take on more leadership roles this season. The Bears combine the experience with a group of younger players that includes sophomores Marko Mkladinovic and Ethan Muza and freshmen Luc Koenig, Martin Breysach and Zsombor Velcz.

The Sun Devils will either play Florida State or San Diego depending on Friday’s result.

Florida State enters the weekend as the No. 10 team in the nation at a 4-0 mark. After the Seminoles 5-2 win over No. 7 Georgia, the team swept the ACC weekly honors.
