Men’s Tennis Falls to Michigan in B1G Quarterfinals

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Michigan State men’s tennis’ run in the Big Ten Tournament came to an end Friday afternoon, as the Spartans dropped their quarterfinal match, 4-0, to No. 2 seed Michigan at Indiana’s IU Tennis Center in Bloomington.

The Spartans end the dual season with a record of 11-14 (3-6 B1G). No. 7 Michigan (23-3, 8-1) moves on to play Northwestern in Saturday’s semifinals.

The Spartans and Wolverines battled for the doubles point, with the point coming down to a top-10 matchup on court one between MSU’s No. 9-ranked Ozan Baris and Max Sheldon and UM’s No. 7-ranked Andrew Fenty and Gavin Young. After MSU’s Anthony Pero and Graydon Lair secured a 6-2 victory on court three over UM’s Ondrej Styler and Jacob Bickerseth, the Wolverines responded with a win at No. 2 doubles to set up a thriling finish on court one. Baris and Sheldon battled, but eventually fell in a close 6-4 to give the Wolverines their first point of the match. The loss was the pair’s first ranked loss in six matches this season.

The Spartans were unable to match the Wolverines in singles, facing ranked opponents on four of six courts. Michigan earned wins on the first three courts to clinch the win, while the remaining matches at No. 4, 5 and 6 went unfinished. Sophomore Josh Portnoy won his first set against the Wolverines’ 59th-ranked Gavin Young, 6-4, before going unfinished at No. 5, while freshman David Saye won his first set against UM’s Jacob Bickersteth,…
