CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The Wisconsin men’s tennis team kicked off team play as it visited Miami on Saturday, Jan. 13. The Badgers (0-1, 0-0 B1G) fell short to the Hurricanes (2-0, 0-0 ACC), losing 4-2 to wrap up their weekend in southern Florida.
UW grabbed the doubles point with wins at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles, and looked to carry the momentum into singles play. The first doubles win came from Matthew Fullerton and Collin Beduhn, who defeated Miami’s Sam Baumgartner and Yannik Rahman, 6-4. Next came Mihailo Popovic and Michael Minasyan with a triumph over Vladislav Melnic and Antonio Prat. The 6-4 win at No. 1 singles secured the first point in the dual match.
After UW captured the doubles edge, Miami bounced back to control singles play. Wisconsin’s Mihailo Popovic and Matthew Fullerton pushed Miami competitors to tiebreakers in both first sets, but the Hurricanes were able to claim both matches.
Wisconsin tallied a singles point with Tomas Zlatohlavek’s victory over Miami’s Nacho Serra Sanchez. Zlatohlavek, a freshman from Czech Republic, earned a victory in his first regular season match.
