Men's Tennis Completes First Fall Action

TULSA, Okla. – Four UCLA men’s tennis student-athletes got the team’s season underway when they convened on Michael D. Case Tennis Center for the ITA All-American Championships.

Sophomores Alexander Hoogmartens and Giacomo Revelli, redshirt sophomore Jeffrey Fradkin and redshirt senior Patrick Zahraj were in action, with each playing singles matches and the combination of Hoogmartens and Zahraj taking to the doubles courts.

Revelli racked up three wins in prequalifying, knocking off Jordi Redelijk of SMU and Ron Amar of Pacific in straight sets before using a comeback effort to take down Oregon’s Vlad Breazu. Revelli’s run was stopped by Trice Pickens of Northwestern. Fradkin also got his start in prequalifying, dropping three-set decisions to the Ducks’ Jesper Klöv-Nilsson and Matthew Hollingworth of Gonzaga.

No. 56 Zahraj played a first-round qualifying match against No. 93 Teodor Giusca of Georgia, who overcame a lost tiebreaker in the opening set to advance in three sets.

No. 23 Hoogmartens, who was tasked with toppling No. 7 Chris Rodesch of Virginia in the first round of the main draw, was felled by a 6-4, 6-1 margin.

Hoogmartens and Zahraj downed Evan Fragistas and Matija Matic of Drake in the opening round of doubles qualifying. The Bruins then overcame the 52nd-ranked team of Mississippi State’s Nemanja Malesevic and Gregor Ramskogler by a 6-4, 6-4 score to inch closer to the main draw. That hope would become a reality when Hoogmartens and Zahraj put up a pair of 6-3 sets versus Jack Anthrop and Alexander Bernard of Ohio State. The first round of the main-draw play represented the end of their time, as No. 16 Cleeve Harper and Eliot Spizzirri of Texas prevailed 7-5, 6-4.

The Bruins continue the fall portion of their schedule Friday, when they start three days of competition at the UCSB Classic. The Arnhold Tennis Center on the campus of UCSB will be the site of the matches.
