ATLANTA, Ga. – Ole Miss men’s tennis fought through yet another round of the Georgia Tech Invitational on Saturday, with the team heading into the final day of competition with an undefeated doubles pairing in Nikola Slavic/Lukas Engelhardt.
The star of the day for the Rebels was senior Lukas Engelhardt, who wrapped day two with an undefeated record across his two matches on the day. So far on the weekend, the Rebels hold a record of 3-5 in singles and 2-2 in doubles.
To start the day off, the Rebels were once again set to play in a pair of doubles matches featuring the pairings of Nikola Slavic/Lukas Engelhardt and Walker Stearns/Gordon Whitwell.
Slavic and Engelhardt got to work right away, earning an 8-4 win over Georgia Tech’s team of McDaniel/Shokry. The Rebel pairing now sits a perfect 2-0 in doubles play on the weekend, as the pair will be set for a shot at the GT Invite doubles crown on Sunday.
The pairing of Stearns and Whitwell was unable to find their way into the win column on Saturday, as the duo faced off against Miami’s Armistead and Serra Sanchez. Ultimately the Hurricane squad prevailed in an 8-4 victory over the Rebels to close out doubles play.
In singles action, Lukas Engelhardt kept his form from doubles and carried it right into his matchup against Yale’s Michael Sun. Engelhardt saw himself down early and needing a strong finish to his match, as Sun picked up a 6-0 victory in set one.
Engelhardt rolled up his sleeves and got to work, grabbing the second and third sets with 6-4 scores in each to claim his first singles win of the weekend in Atlanta.
Despite the Rebels’ best efforts, the other three Ole Miss players competing in singles on Saturday were unable to find wins in their respective matchups. Slavic, Stearns and Whitwell each saw two-set losses to their opponents in Georgia, as now Slavic and Engelhardt will both enter day three with 1-1 records on the weekend in singles play.
The final day at the Georgia Tech Invitational, as well as the final day of the team’s fall season, is set to begin tomorrow morning bright and early at 8 a.m. CT. Day three from Georgia will consist of one more round of doubles followed by one round of singles to close out the weekend.
