AUBURN, Ala. – No. 68 Petar Jovanovic’s bid for an individual tournament title came up short in the finals of the ITA Southern Regional Championships on Tuesday morning.
The Mississippi State sophomore fought back after falling in the first set 6-1 to 78th-ranked Enzo Aguiard of Alabama. Jovanovic evened things up with a 7-6(3) tiebreaking win in the second set but was edged by Aguiard 6-4 in the last set to claim the singles’ championship.
Jovanovic still receives an invitation to represent the Bulldogs in the ITA Fall National Championships in San Diego, California early next month.
The 6-foot-4 native of Podgorica, Montenegro has competed in 21 matches since Oct. 2 and posted 16 total victories during that span.
During the six days of play at the ITA Southern Regional Championships, MSU racked up 18 total wins as a team.
“I was very impressed with the way our team competed this week,” said head coach Matt Roberts. “Everyone was hungry to work and build their resilience in the tough moments. We are excited to finish out our fall schedule and look forward to the start of spring.”
The next action for the Bulldogs will be in the ITF Tallahassee 15K beginning on Monday.
