Jacobs, Carter Upset No. 1 Doubles Duo In Nation

CARY, N.C. – Beating the No. 1-ranked doubles team in the nation is a pretty solid way to start a new tennis partnership. Husky sophomore Alexia Jacobs and transfer junior Reece Carter announced themselves as a duo to be reckoned with as they eliminated the top seeds from the ITA All-American Championships in the main draw first round today.

With Carter new to the squad, she and Jacobs were playing their first official match together today, although their separate experience earned them a preseason No. 17 ranking. Taking on the No. 1 ranked pair in the national rankings, Ange Oby Kajuru and Anastasiya Komar from Oklahoma State was quite a stiff first test.

The OSU pair won the first set, 6-3, and had a 3-1 lead in the second set before Jacobs and Carter rallied back and saved a couple match points to force a tiebreak, which they won easily, 7-1. That forced another 10-point tiebreak, and again the Dawgs rolled through the breaker for the victory, 10-3.

They now advance to the round of 16 at the All-Americans, which is the first and largest national tourney on the collegiate tennis calendar. Tomorrow they will face Sarah Hamner and Kaitlyn Carnicella of South Carolina at 1 p.m. Pacific time.

Jacobs and Carter were also each in the main singles draw today, but did not advance. They will have consolation singles matches on Thursday. Carter fell to Kailey Evans of San Diego, 6-3, 6-2, and Jacobs lost a 6-2, 6-2 match against Theadora Rabman of North Carolina. Their consolation singles matches are scheduled for 7 a.m. Pacific.
