Huskies Sweep San Jose State In Season Opener

SEATTLE – Washington hit the ground swinging today, sweeping its 2023 season opener over the San Jose State Spartans at Hawaii’s UH Tennis Complex. The Dawgs (1-0) did not drop a set in singles play in the 7-0 win, and did not allow more than three games in any singles set.

The Huskies saw four of their six singles starters earn their first dual match wins in purple. Transfers Astrid Olsen, Jennifer Kerr, and Melissa Sakar all got their first wins, as did true freshman Erika Matsuda.

Doubles presented a challenge as the Huskies got reacquainted with match play. Olsen and Kerr fell at the No. 1 spot, but the Huskies had 6-4 wins at both No. 2 and No. 3 to clinch the doubles point. Sarah-Maude Fortin and Matsuda teamed up at No. 2, and Hikaru Sato and Sakar were the No. 3 pair.

Sato played No. 1 singles today for the Dawgs and rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Carolina Millan. Fortin opened at No. 2 and defeated Alba Pedrero Galindo by a 6-0, 6-2 count. Olsen’s first dual win came with just one game surrendered, as she beat Raquel Villan Pereira, 6-0, 6-1, at third singles.

Kerr handled Lara Marco Mas at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-1. At the five spot, Sakar beat Jovana Babic, 6-3, 6-2. Rounding out the lineup, Matsuda got her first dual win, 6-2, 6-3, over Olaya Bances Iglesias.

The Huskies will take on the Rainbow Wahine on Saturday at 1 p.m. Pacific time to end their opening week in the islands.
