Bloomington, Ind. – The #62 Nebraska men’s tennis team claimed its 14th win of the season, a program best since 2016, with NU’s 5-2 victory over #69 Indiana on Friday afternoon. The Huskers (14-8, 3-3 Big Ten) dropped the doubles point, but took five singles victories to take down the Hoosiers (14-9, 2-4 Big Ten). Nebraska will face Purdue on Sunday, April 14, seeking one more regular season road win.
The Big Ten matchup began with doubles play at the IU Tennis Center. No. 3 doubles had a quick match, as Leo Linquet and Shunya Maruyama fell to Facundo Yunis and Luc Bouiler, 3-6. On Court Two, Calvin Mueller and Lars Johann faced Sam Landau and Carson Haskins, but dropped the match 2-6. Recently ranked Husker doubles duo No. 81 Anton Shepp and Nic Wiedenhorn took on Ilya Tirapolsky and Jagger Saylor on Court One. The No. 1 doubles match was left unfinished at 5-5, with the doubles point clinched for the Hoosiers.
Despite dropping the doubles point, the Big Red got off to a strong start for singles. Maruyama dominated on Court Three, defeating Michael Andre, 6-1, 6-2, to even the score. Johann was next to finish, taking down Saylor 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 4 slot. The Hoosiers tied it up with a victory from Yunis over Shepp on Court Two, 7-5, 6-2. Mueller rallied in a close second-set to defeat ranked No. 74 Sam Landau, 6-4, 7-6(2), on Court One. Hietaranta clinched the match for the Huskers on Court Six, taking down Deacon Thomas, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Linquet rallied from a dropped first-set to round it out for NU, defeating Tiraspolsky 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, and making the final score 5-2, Nebraska.
With the win, the Huskers improve to 14-8 (3-3 Big Ten), the most wins for the program since 2016, when the Big Red finished 14-13 (4-7 Big Ten). The victory was also the third-straight win for the Huskers over the Hoosiers. Mueller had another strong singles match, playing in the No. 1 singles slot to claim his third ranked win and 24th singles victory this season.
