Fayetteville, Ark. – Roni Hietaranta and Calvin Mueller both advanced into the Round of 16 to finish the second day of the ITA Regional Championships held at the Billingsley Tennis Center in Arkansas.
Following a pair of wins yesterday, Mueller bested Oklahoma’s Justin Schlageter, 6-4, 6-3 to advance into Round of 16 play tomorrow. The Bruchkoebl, Germany native earned his team-leading third singles win of the tournament and will do battle with Carl Roothman of the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
Hietaranta will join Mueller in the Round 16 after a consecutive-set victory over Drake’s Oliver Johansson, 6-4, 6-4. A year after his 22-win season with the Huskers, the Lappeenranta, Finland native meets Jeremy Schifris of the Drake Bulldogs Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
On the tournament, Nebraska now has 10 wins in singles play which is the most they’ve had in fall competition this year. Every Husker has a win in singles play this season that has participated in at least one match.
In doubles play, all three duos won their opening-round matchup including a pair of tie-breaker wins to begin the morning. However, all three teams fell just short in the second contest, eliminating the Huskers from the doubles draw.
