Hamner Advances in Singles at NCAA Individual Championship – University of South Carolina Athletics

WACO, TX. – Sarah Hamner and Kaitlyn Carnicella represented the Gamecocks at the NCAA Individual Championship, competing in the first round of singles on Tuesday afternoon at Baylor University. Carnicella fell to her opponent in three matches while Hamner advanced to the round of 32 which takes place tomorrow.

Carnicella started off strong against No. 80 Lan Mi of California Berkeley, pulling away to defeat her 7-5 in the first set after the two went back and forth for the first couple points. The sophomore battled hard but ultimately dropped her match after falling 2-6 for the final two sets to wrap up her fall season.

No. 10 Hamner, seeded amongst the top nine through 16 players in this tournament, claimed a tightly contested first match against Duke’s No. 73 Eleana Yu. The Blue Devil forced the Gamecock to a tiebreaker set but Hamner was able to top Yu 8-6 before ultimately claiming the win after beating the sophomore 6-4 in the second set.
