Five things to know: Badgers open spring season


1. NEW BEGINNINGS: Wisconsin men’s tennis opens its 105th season on Friday, traveling to the FAU Invite in Boca Raton, Fla. Play will be a hidden dual format with flighted individual results, meaning teams will play separate opponents in singles and doubles each day.

On Friday, Wisconsin will take on Mercer in singles (8 a.m. CT) before facing Mercer (11:30 a.m.) and Army in doubles (12:15 p.m.). Saturday, Wisconsin will face Florida Atlantic in doubles (11:30 a.m.) and singles (12:30 p.m.). To wrap up the weekend on Sunday, Wisconsin will take on Army in singles at 7:30 a.m.

2. NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK: The 2025 roster includes four freshmen that will make their regular season debut in Florida this weekend. Edouard Aubert (Geneva, Switzerland), Sachiv Kumar (Novi, Mich.), Patrick Meszaros (Budapest, Hungary) and Ferdi Kloesters (Grunwald, Germany) will all represent the Badgers in their first official collegiate action.

Aubert joined the Badgers after touring in Europe from 2021-24. He was a singles champion at the U18 Swiss Championships and was a finalist at ITF J60 Budapest.

Kumar became a Badger after winning the Michigan state title in three straight seasons (2022-24) and was named a two-time high school All-American. He was a finalist for the Detroit Athletic Club athlete of the year award.

Meszaros will make his first official appearance for Wisconsin after strong play in the Hungarian youth circuit. He ranked as the No. 1 Hungarian U18 player and was No. 9 in the Hungarian ATP rankings.

Kloesters joined the Badgers this month after assembling an impressive youth career in Germany. He was ranked as high as No. 10 in Germany and No. 2 in Bavaria during his youth career. He holds a Universal Tennis Rating of 12.30 and a World Tennis Rating of 8.8.

3. KNOW YOUR OPPONENTS: Mercer’s doubles pair of Marceau Fouilhoux and Nemanja Stefanovic rank No. 55 in the latest ITA doubles rankings. Florida Atlantic’s pair of Mark Havlicek and Jiri Jenicek rank No. 86 in the nation.
