Fishback tackles No. 5 Monday in NCAA first round

ORLANDO, Fla. – Virginia Tech’s Ryan Fishback defeated Tennessee’s Johannus Monday – 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 – on Monday in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Singles Championship.

In his NCAA singles debut, Fishback was able to snag a break in the first set to set the tone for the afternoon with a first-set win. Monday fought back in decisive fashion in the second set to even the match up, however.

Between the first and second set, lightning in the area forced the competition inside.

Fishback didn’t allow the change in environment deter him, though, as he started the third set holding, breaking, then holding again for a 3-0 lead. He was able to hold out for the rest of the match and pick up the top-five victory.

The winner of Andrew Fenty (Michigan) and Etienne Donnet (Louisville) will face Fishback in the Round of 32 on Tuesday.

Fishback will also start his double journey tomorrow with Jordan Chrysostom. As the 24th-ranked pair in the country, they will face No. 3 Cleeve Harper and Eliot Spizzirri of Texas on Tuesday.
