Fenty, Styler, Young Advance in NCAA Singles Championships; Doubles Delayed Due to Weather

LAKE NONA, Fla. — Two members of the University of Michigan men’s tennis team advanced to the round of 16 at the 2023 NCAA Singles Championship this afternoon (Tuesday, May 23), as Andrew Fenty and Ondrej Styler picked up victories in the second round of action at the USTA National Campus.
The win in singles solidified Fenty’s third All-American honor, as he was a singles and doubles recipient in 2020. Styler, who entered the tournament with All-America status by virtue of his No. 8 seeding, proved it today with a win as well.
Michigan hasn’t had two players reach the round of 16 since 1981 when Mike Leach and Matt Horwich won their first two rounds.
Styler defeated Pepperdine’s Daniel De Jonge 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4). Tied 2-2 in the first set, Styler held serve and then broke De Jonge to take the 4-2 lead and pushed it to 5-2 on his next service. In the second set, Styler grabbed an early break and led 2-0 but De Jonge won five straight games to take his first lead of the match and push it to a third set. De Jonge took a 3-1 lead in the third before Styler won three straight games to take a 4-3 edge. The two traded serves before the tiebreaker, where Styler earned a mini break for match point, 7-4.
Fenty dispatched Virginia Tech’s Ryan Fischback in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. The two traded breaks to start the first set before Fenty rattled off five straight games for the 6-1 score. Again in the second set, the pair exchanged breaks before a double break for Fenty pushed him ahead 3-1 and he clinched match point with a double fault.
Gavin Young lost his second-round match to Columbia’s Michael Zheng. The two traded 6-3 sets before Zheng closed with a 6-0 third set.
The opening round of doubles matches, originally slated for today, have been moved to Wednesday (May 24) due to inclement weather.
