Fenty Makes History as Michigan Wins First Match of ITA Kick Off

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Andrew Fenty won his 100th career doubles match — becoming the first Wolverine to reach the century mark — to highlight the fourth-ranked University of Michigan men’s tennis team’s 4-0 win over Cal Poly in the opening match of the ITA Kick-Off on Saturday (Jan. 28).

An All-American in doubles and singles, Fenty owns a 100-27 record in doubles and has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation in doubles, with former partner Mattias Siimar. Last season, he and partner Gavin Young won the ITA Midwest Regional Doubles Championship and qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championship. 

The Wolverines (5-0) won the doubles point for the fifth straight match winning at No. 1 and 2, and leading on No. 3 before the match was left unfinished. Ondrej Styler and Patrick Maloney topped Cal Poly’s (0-1) Noah Berry and Colter Smith 6-4 at No. 2 to remain unbeaten in doubles play at 4-0. Fenty and Young, ranked No. 14 as a duo, took care of Joe Leather and Bastiaan Westrate at No. 1 with a 6-3 win, their 10th win this year.

Fenty pushed Michigan ahead 2-0 claiming the team’s first singles point at No. 3. Ranked No. 6, Fenty lost just one game against Smith, 6-0, 6-1 for his 20th singles win of the season.

Moments later, No. 20-ranked Young claimed his second dual win over the season with 6-0, 6-1 scores over Fernando Fonseca at No. 4.

Styler clinched the match at No. 2, as the No. 20-ranked Wolverine defeated Leather 6-1, 6-4. In the second set, he found himself down 3-4 before he rattled off the last three games for the victory and advanced Michigan to the finals tomorrow afternoon.

Michigan will face the winner of today’s Arkansas/Northwestern match on Sunday (Jan. 29) at 2 p.m. The winner of that match will qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championship in mid-February.
