Cougars Capture 4-3 Victory over Gonzaga


Box Score PULLMAN, Wash. (January 22, 2023) – Washington State captured the first four singles matches in straight sets to secure a 4-3 victory over Gonzaga Sunday afternoon at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
 
With the win, the Cougars improve to 2-0 on the season and move to 24-1 all-time against Gonzaga. The Bulldogs fall to 2-1.
 
Gonzaga captured the opening doubles point following come-from-behind victories at No. 1 and 2. WSU struck first on Court 3 when Yura Nakagawa and Fifa Kumhom came away with a 6-4 win over Kianna Oda and Rose Hayes. At No. 2, WSU’s duo of Yang Lee and Elyse Tse held two match points up 5-4 but could not close out the win as Tiegan Aitken and Jenna Sloan rallied for a 7-5 win, pushing the deciding match to Court 1. There, Gonzaga’s pair of Cate Broerman and Adrianna Sosnowska saved two match points before escaping with a 7-6 victory over Maxine Murphy and Eva Alvarez Sande to secure the opening point.
 
In singles play, Tse quickly evened the match at 1-1 as she had little trouble in defeating Oda, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4. Nakagawa gave WSU its first lead of the day as she posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sloan in her collegiate dual match debut.
 
At No. 2, Alvarez Sande rallied from 0-4 in the first set to defeat Sosnowska, 6-4, 7-6 (4), pushing the Cougar lead to 3-1. Kumhom followed that with a 6-2, 6-0- win over Aitken at No. 5, clinching the team victory for the Cougars.
 
In a match that lasted nearly three hours, Broerman outlasted Murphy at No. 1, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, while Hayes came away with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mikhailova at No. 6.
 
WSU is next in action Friday when it travels east to face No. 9 Virginia in the first round of the 2023 ITA Kickoff Classic in Charlottesville, Va.
