'Cats Complete Spring Break Sweep


TULSA, Okla. – #17 Arizona went two for two on the road this week after defeating #52 Tulsa 6-1 on Wednesday, March 8 to round out their last non-conference match of the regular season. The Wildcats are now 12-3 overall heading into Pac-12 play. 

It was a gritty doubles competition tonight that saw the ‘Cats come out on top. Herman Hoeyeraal and Gustaf Strom won 6-3 against Daniel Siddall and Timothy Seger at two doubles before #58 Jonas Ziverts and Jay Friend fell 3-6 to Kody Pearson and Connor Di Marco at one doubles leaving the point up for grabs on court three. Nick Lagaev and Colton Smith pushed to a tiebreaker where they defeated Stefan Hampe and Ezequiel Santalla 7-6(2). The pair also clinched the point against Oklahoma. 

The Wildcats clinched the match at 4-0 on courts three, fourt and six then won two more matches on two and five. Strom finished first at three singles sweeping Callum Gale 6-0 in the first set then taking the second 6-3. The Swede is now 10-1 in dual singles and on a seven-week win streak. #97 Hoeyeraal and Friend each collected their eighth victory so far this spring, the Norweigian doing so in straight sets at four singles against Volodymyr Zakharov (6-3, 6-4). Friend, a freshman at six singles, saved himself from a third set and clinched the match for Arizona after defeating Seger 6-3, 7-6(6). 

#115 Lagaev battled Santalla in a third set super tiebreak that saw the Wildcat walk away winning 10-4 after falling 6-7(5) in the first then coming back 6-3 in the second. #78 Smith took his third loss this spring after #34 Pearson bested him 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the No. 1 lineup spot. #38 Ziverts won the final point of the match in three sets against Hampe at two singles (4-6, 6-3, 6-4). 

Arizona has wrapped up their last non-conference match of the regular season and head into their first Pac-12 contest against #25 Stanford on Friday, March 17 at 2 p.m. in California followed by #27 Cal on Sunday, March 19 at 2 p.m.
