Carly Briggs Adds SEC All-Tournament Team to her Florida Legacy

Carly Briggs extends her win streak to eight after going undefeated in the 2024 SEC Tournament. Briggs also posted her highest-ranked career win, defeating the No. 19 ranked player in the nation, Nicole Khirin.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.– Following the 2024 SEC Tennis Tournament, the Southeastern Conference has named five players to its All-Tournament Team. Among those five standouts is Florida’s No. 68 Carly Briggs.

Senior Carly Briggs went undefeated on both the singles and doubles side this past weekend, tallying four wins for the Gators. Briggs first win of the tournament was alongside Qavia Lopez, defeating South Carolina’s Shahar Biran and Elise Mills 6-2. Briggs then faced Biran in the singles category with a back and forth battle in the first set before Briggs claimed it at 7-5. Her momentum carried forward into the second set as she finished off Biran 6-0 extending her singles win streak to seven.

Entering the tournament semifinals against the No. 12 ranked team in the nation, Carly Briggs knew her work was far from over. Briggs and doubles partner Qavia Lopez were met with two of the nation’s most competitive singles players; Carson Branstine and Nicole Khirin. However, the Florida duo made their presence known from the start and pulled out a 6-4 win on court two.

Carly Briggs met No. 19 Nicole Khirin in the singles category of the semifinals as well. Briggs last faced Khirin on Mar. 1, 2024, and fell 6-1, 6-2 making her eager for redemption. Briggs fought hard against the top-20 player, making a comeback win in the first set, taking it 7-5. Khirin fought back beating Briggs 6-2 in the second, and without hesitation Briggs closed out 6-1 in the third and final set. Briggs win over Khirin marks her highest-career win to date and proved once more her ability to battle in vital moments for the Gators.

Head Coach Roland Thornqvist comments, “I was so happy to see Carly’s exemplary performance being rewarded by being  named on the all tournament team. She’s arguably the most competitive player I’ve had the pleasure of coaching in my 23 years here. There’s no doubt of her importance to this team’s success but her impact will be talked about here long after she’s graduated.”
