Cardinal Blanks Sacramento State - Stanford University Athletics

STANFORD, Calif. – Hosting Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon from Taube Family Tennis Center, No. 17 Stanford men’s tennis blanked the Hornets 4-0 to improve to 4-3 on the season.

Stanford’s pair of Anders Matta and Harsh Hemang Parikh got the match started strong with a convincing 6-1 doubles victory over Hayden Rand/Jiri Novak on court three. Battling in the remaining two doubles contests, Nico Godsick and Kyle Kang overcame Sac State’s Jan Silva/Adam Chodur on court two by a count of 6-4 to earn the doubles point.

The clinch left court one undecided at 6-6 after Nishesh Basavareddy and Samir Banerjee traded blows with Sacramento State’s top pair.

Graduate student Filip Kolasinski improved to 4-1 on the season, including 3-0 at No. 6 singles, after cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Rudolfs Aksenoks to move the Cardinal advantage to 2-0.

Playing at No. 2 singles, junior Max Basing notched a 6-4, 6-3 straight-set victory over Mate Voros, pushing the Cardinal to within a point of the clinch.

After dropping the opening set 4-6 on court five, No. 77 Neel Rajesh was on his way to an impressive comeback victory, winning the second set 6-0 and leading in the third 5-0, but his efforts were stopped just short when Basavareddy clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Mark Keki on the top court.

Freshman Hudson Rivera was also on top in a third set when the match was concluded, leading Adam Chodur 6-4, 4-6, 3-0 at No. 4 singles.

With the win, Basavareddy improved to 3-0 on the year – with all three victories coming at the No. 1 spot in the order. The clincher was his first of 2023-24 and the second of his career.

The Cardinal will take a break from action next week, returning to Taube on February 22 at 2 p.m. when it hosts UC Davis.
