RALEIGH, N.C. – The Duke women’s tennis team closed the fall season in strong fashion, collecting wins in six of its eight singles matches in the NC State Invitational in Raleigh, N.C., over the weekend.
In singles, sophomores Katie Codd and Elle Christensen went undefeated against their South Carolina and Wake Forest foes. Codd swept South Carolina’s Olympe Lancelot in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, on Saturday, before recording a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 win over Nevena Carton of Wake Forest on Sunday.
Christensen bested Anna Kantor of South Carolina, 6-0, 6-4, in her opening match and defeated Wake Forest’s Whitley Pate in a three-set battle, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Graduate students Iuliia Bryzgalova and Brianna Shvets went up against Ole Miss and host NC State during the event. Bryzgalova battled Ava Hrastar of Ole Miss in her first match, but dropped a hard-fought three-set decision, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. She went up against NC State’s Gina Dittman on Sunday and fell 6-1, 6-1 in the end.
Shvets finished 2-0 in singles play, after defeating Ludmila Kareisova of Ole Miss, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, and NC State’s Abigail Rencheli, 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles action, the Blue Devils split their matches on the weekend with Bryzgalova and Shvets falling in a 6-4 decision to Hrastar and Kareisova on Saturday, before rebounding with a 6-4 victory over Dittman and Rencheli on Sunday.
The duo of Christensen and Codd defeated Kantor and Lancelot, 6-2, in their opening match, before dropping a 6-1 decision to Carton and Pate on Sunday to round out the competition.
