Big Weekend On Tap For Men's Tennis As New Facility Opens

A fun weekend of college tennis is on tap this weekend in Chapel Hill.

The 13th-ranked University of North Carolina men’s tennis team will host a pair of ranked Atlantic Coast Conference foes while debuting its beautiful, new, state-of-the-art outdoor facility, the Chewning Tennis Center.

The Tar Heels will host No. 23 NC State on Friday at 5 p.m. and No. 16 Wake Forest on Sunday at 1 p.m. Friday’s match versus the Wolfpack is part of a doubleheader with the top-ranked UNC women, who will host Florida State at 2 p.m.

Under construction for over a year, the Chewning Tennis Center will host its first matches for the Friday doubleheader. The facility, adjacent to the existing Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center indoor courts, completely replaces the former outdoor courts with six championship courts and a practice area with six courts of equal quality. The supporting stadium includes raised seating, patios, viewing areas and fan amenities. A highlight is a court-level patio with seating mere feet from the playing surface.

The new facility also includes a full-service concession stand with sodas, beer and wine, popcorn, candy, nachos and an assortment of other refreshments. Friday’s men’s match also will include fan raffles.

“We are so excited to play in our new facility against two very talented ACC opponents,” 30th-year head coach Sam Paul says. “NC State and Wake Forest will provide stern tests for us as we come down the final stretch of the conference regular season. We’re looking forward to playing before our fans at our beautiful new stadium.”

The Tar Heels (14-5, 6-1 ACC) have won seven of their last eight matches, including three in a row. Friday’s match with NCSU will be the first of five consecutive home dates to close the regular season. The 2023 ACC Championship will be held in Cary on April 19-23.

Carolina Athletics is planning a grand opening, ribbon-cutting ceremony for the facility later in August.
