Beck Concludes Season in Round of 16 at NCAAs


ORLANDO – In a tight, thrilling match, Duke women’s tennis senior Chloe Beck had her season come to a close Wednesday in the round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.

Beck went up against 50th-ranked Layne Sleeth of Oklahoma in the morning for a chance to move on to the final eight.  A product of Watkinsville, Ga., Beck opened the match by falling behind 0-2, but came back to take a 4-2 lead.  She went on to win the first set, 6-3.  

In the second set, Beck once again fell behind 0-2 and trailed 2-4, but came back to even the match, 6-6, but fell, 4-7, in the tiebreaker.  In the third and final set, Beck was behind 1-4 and 2-5, but responded by winning three straight games to even the score, 5-5.  Leading, 6-5, Beck had a chance to serve for the match, but dropped the game to send the match to a second-straight tiebreaker.  Sleeth was able to register a 7-2 win in the tiebreaker to get the victory.  

Beck had her six-match winning streak snapped and concluded an outstanding season with a 33-5 record.
