Bears Turn To Tulsa Qualifying Draw, Wrap Up Aggie Invite

Irwanto Falls In Pre-Qualifying Round Of 32; Bears Ousted In Davis

TULSA, Okla./DAVIS – The pre-qualifying singles tournament at the ITA All-American Championships came to an end Sunday with no members of the California men’s tennis team advancing to qualifying singles – though one Golden Bear is already in the field – and the Aggie Invitational at UC Davis also ended, with two Bears falling in the singles semifinals.

In the pre-qualiifying round of 64 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Cal freshman Jonathan Irwanto added another win, beating Mississippi’s Isac Stromberg, 6-3, 6-0, while teammate Alex Chang fell to North Carolina’s Will Peters, 6-4, 6-4. But Irwanto lost in the round of 32 to Princeton’s Ellis Short, 7-5, 7-6(3).

Cal’s Carl Emil Overbeck was previously named to the qualifying singles field. He will play Princeton’s 73rd-ranked Top Nidunjianzan in the opening round of 128 on Monday at 8 a.m. CT.

In Davis, Cal’s John Kim (Flight A) and Alex Aney (Flight B) reached their respective singles semifinals. But Kim fell to Constantinos Djakouris of UC Davis, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, while Aney lost to Brett Brinkman of UC Davis, 6-4, 6-1.

Along with Overbeck playing in singles in Tulsa, the Cal pair of Chang and Tim Stepanov plays Baylor’s 48th-ranked Martin Breysach and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen in qualifying doubles at 12:30 p.m. CT. Overbeck partners with Derrick Chen to face BYU’s Wally Thayne and Zach Fuchs also at 12:30 p.m. CT.
