Bears Reach Doubles Semis In San Diego

Katja Wiersholm won again with Jessica Alsola in San Diego on Friday, while five other Bears began play in Arizona.

SAN DIEGO, Calif./TEMPE, Ariz. – The Cal women’s tennis duo of Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm advanced to the consolation doubles semifinals with a victory Friday at the ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego. Also Friday, five Golden Bears began play in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Arizona.
 
Wiersholm and Alsola defeated BYU’s Yunjia Huang and Emilee Astle, 4-6, 6-3, 10-5, in the quarterfinals at the Barnes Tennis Center. The Bears will play Kentucky’s Carlota Molina and Elizabeth Stevens in Saturday’s consolation semifinals at a time TBA.
 
Cal’s Makenna Thiel and Erin Richardson, who completed play in consolation doubles at fall nationals on Thursday night, joined three teammates at the Arizona State tournament in Tempe. Thiel won in singles Friday, beating Auburn’s Anastasia Astakhova, 7-5, 6-1, while Richardson fell to ASU’s 111th-ranked Rachel Hanford, 6-1, 6-4, at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
 
The Bears collected another singles win from Hannah Viller Moeller, who bested San Diego’s Jordyn McBride, 6-1, 6-2, while Cami Brown lost a close match to Ohio State’s Madeline Atway, 7-6(2), 7-6(5), and Valentina Ivanov fell to the Sun Devils’ 46th-ranked Giulia Morlet, 7-5, 6-4.
 
In doubles at ASU, Brown and Viller Moeller dropped a 6-2 result to Ohio State’s Atway and Danielle Wilson.
 
Both tournaments end on Sunday.
