Bears Complete Play In Sherwood Collegiate Cup

THOUSAND OAKS – Four members of the California men’s tennis team concluded play in the Sherwood Collegiate Cup on Sunday, with sophomores Alex Aney and Ethan Schiffman winning in singles at the Sherwood Country Club.
 
Aney defeated USC’s Tristan Bradley 6-3, 6-2, while Schiffman beat UCLA’s Leo van Bismarck 6-0, 6-3. Also in singles, Cal’s 123rd-ranked senior Alex Chang fell to USC’s Niels Hoffmann 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 and Jonathan Irwanto lost to Pepperdine’s Linus Carlsson Halldin 6-2, 7-6(5).
 
In doubles, Pepperdine’s Carlsson Halldin and Zach Stephens beat Chang and Irwanto 6-4, while Schiffman and Aney fell to New Mexico’s Nicolas Recoura and Daniil Kahkniuk 7-5.
 
Chang next plays in the ITA All-American Championships starting Wednesday.
 
TULSA, Okla. – Cal’s Derrick Chen lost to Ohio State’s fourth-seeded & 113th-ranked Bryce Nakashima 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(5) in the pre-qualifying singles second round of the ITA All-American Championships on Sunday at the Case Tennis Center.

With Chen and sophomore teammate Timofey Stepanov – who lost Saturday – out of pre-qualifying singles, the next Bears to play at ITA All-Americans are Carl Emil Overbeck and Theo Dean. The two Bears will compete in qualifying doubles while Overbeck will also play in qualifying singles, with both draws beginning Monday. The main draws start Wednesday, with Dean already in the singles field and the Cal senior tandem of Alex Chang and Mikey Wright already in the doubles field.
