Axel Nefve Advances to NCAA Singles Championship Round of 32; Downs Florida State’s No. 7 Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc

ORLANDO, Fla. – After a five-hour, 33-minute weather delay, Florida men’s tennis’ Axel Nefve advanced to his third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Singles Championship’s round of 32 with a three-set victory early Tuesday morning at the USTA National Campus.

No. 32 Nefve took on Florida State’s No. 7 Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and started out on the wrong foot in the opening set, but rallied back from the slow start. After falling behind 3-0 down a double break, the graduate student flipped a switch and won the next six games. The winners from Nefve were being sprayed around the court and Cornut-Chauvinc was broken three times, allowing the Gator to win the first set 6-3.

In the second set, Cornut-Chauvinc once again jumped out to a double break lead on Nefve. Yet, Nefve couldn’t comeback like the opener and fell 6-1, sending the match to a third set decider. Entering the match, the Delray Beach, Fla. native was 5-5 this season in three-set matches.

The third set was much tighter in the first four games, as the two sides were leveled at 2-2. After holding serve for the 3-2 lead, Nefve pounced on Cornut-Chauvinc for the first break of the deciding set and held serve once again extending the lead to 5-2. Looking to serve out the match up 40-30 at 5-3, Nefve delivered a beautiful serve out wide and moved up the court after a strong forehand pushed Cornut-Chauvinc deep past the baseline. The backhand from the Seminole came up short and Nefve completed the victory 6-3 in the third set.

With the victory, Nefve got his revenge on Cornut-Chauvinc, who defeated the Gator 6-1, 6-4 at USTA’s College MatchDay on Feb. 2. Additionally, Nefve improves to 22-15 in overall singles and added his eighth ranked-victory of the season.

Following up in the round of 32, Nefve squares up with Arizona’s No. 40 Jonas Ziverts at 3 p.m. ET. Ziverts advanced by defeating Ohio State’s Justin Boulais 7-5, 6-4.

Nefve also will be in action in the NCAA Doubles Championship with Will Grant. The No. 5 ranked pair will face-off against USC’s No. 13 Stefan Dostanic/Bradley Frye at a time to be determined.
