MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Three members of the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish women’s tennis team competed at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic this past weekend. Freshman Bojana Pozder, junior Julia Andreach and senior Page Freeman all competed at the event. It was the first event for the tennis squad for this 2022-23 season.
On day one, the Irish tandem of Freeman and Pozder opened the day with a 6-2 win over Anastasia Smirnova and Emma Valletta of VCU. Andreach teamed with a student-athlete from Mercer, who also earned a 6-2 victory, theirs coming against a pair from Miami (OH).
In singles play, Pozder suffered a 6-2, 6-3 loss in her first collegiate action. Andreach tallied a pair of wins knocking off Laura Rico of Miami (OH), 6-2, 6-2, and Victoria Smirnova from VCU, 7-5, 6-1. Freeman opened the event with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Norah Balthazor of Butler before taking down Navy’s Stella Ribaudo, 6-2, 6–0.
Saturday began with doubles where Andreach and her Mercer teammate couldn’t carry over the momentum from Friday, falling to a pair from Iowa State, 6-4. Freeman and Pozder fell to the eventual tournament champion, Madison Sieg and Naomi Cheong of USC, 7-6 (1).
Andreach began singles play with a 6-0, 7-6 win over Liz Norman of Purdue before falling to Sieg, who would eventually become the tournament’s champion. Freeman suffered a 7-5, 6-3 loss to Emma Staker of Oklahoma to conclude Saturday’s action.
