Alabama Men’s Tennis Splits Sunday Doubleheader


TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men’s tennis program (6-1) picked up its fourth sweep and sixth win of the season during a Sunday doubleheader inside the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility.

The Crimson Tide opened the day by suffering its first loss of the season to No. 19 Columbia (3-1). The Lions claimed the doubles point after winning on courts one and three. From there, Columbia would win all six singles matches to earn the 7-0 victory.

Alabama closed the doubleheader with a sweep over Jacksonville State (4-2). UA pair Joao Ferreira and Zach Foster (6-4) won on court two, before German Samofalov and Yair Sarouk secured the doubles point via a 6-3 decision on court one. The Tide would proceed to sweep all six singles matches to claim its fourth 7-0 victory of the season.

Match vs. No. 19 Columbia

  • Columbia clinched the doubles point with wins on courts one and three
  • UA pair German Samofalov and Yair Sarouk were in a 5-6 battle on court two when the point was clinched
  • Max Westphal defeated Alabama’s Matias Ponce De Leon on court four to claim the first singles point (6-2, 6-1)
  • The Lions would go on to win the other five matches in singles play to secure the victory

Match vs. Jacksonville State

  • Alabama responded in the second match, claiming the doubles point after Ferreira and Foster (6-4) and doubles pair Samofalov and Sarouk (6-3) found success on courts three and one, respectively
  • Ferreira went 6-0, 6-2 on court five to capture the Tide’s first singles point
  • Enzo Aguiard pushed Alabama out to a 3-0 lead after winning 6-4, 6-0 on court two
  • Alabama’s Foster went 6-4, 6-2 to claim another singles point with a win at No. 6
  • German Samfalov (6-2, 6-4) and Planinsek (6-3, 6-3) both prevailed on courts four and one, giving the Tide a 6-0 advantage
  • Matias Ponce De Leon’s victory (7-6 (2), 6-4) at No. 3 secured Alabama the sweep over Jacksonville State
