TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –– The Alabama men’s tennis team opened the dual match season Saturday with a pair of wins, downing both Samford and Mercer at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility. The Crimson Tide started the day with a 7-0 win over the Bulldogs before securing a 6-1 win against the Bears.
The doubles pairing of Enzo Aguiard and Filip Planinsek recorded a win against Samford, while Planinsek, Aguiard, Roan Jones, German Samofalov and Yair Sarouk went undefeated in singles play.
It marked the sixth consecutive year that Alabama has swept its opening day double header and the ninth time it has happened in the last 10 years.
Alabama 7, Samford 0
- The Crimson Tide jumped out to a quick start with Enzo Aguiard and Filip Planinsek clinching the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Samford’s M. Ali Bellalouna and Santiago Arredondo at No. 1 doubles
- In singles play, Roan Jones was the first Crimson Tide player to secure a point, taking a 6-1, 6-4 win against Sandeep Mohandoss
- German Samofalov secured a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 4 singles spot against Santiago Arredondo, while Aguiard defeated J.B. Pickard 6-1, 7-6 (3) for the deciding point
- In his debut, Yair Sarouk won in two sets over Martin Schwartzman 6-3, 6-2
Alabama 6, Mercer 1
- Foster and Jones rushed out to a 6-3 victory over the Bears’ duo of Andrew Branicki and Samuel Barrow
- Moments later, Aguiard and Sarouk posted a 6-3 score against Mariano Argote and Samuel MacLeod to give Alabama a 1-0 start
- With Mercer’s Lucas Dini having to retire due to injury to give Aguiard the win, Planinsek made it a 3-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Marino Argote
- After the Bears’ Marceau Foulihoux defeated Joao Ferreira (6-4, 6-0) , Jones answered back and clinched the match for the Tide as he battled for a win over Nemanja Stefanovic 1-6, 6-1, 6-0
