CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Jonas Ziverts defeated Christopher Bulus (UNLV) in round one of the NCAA Singles Championships, and Gustaf Strom was knocked out by Luc Fomba (TCU).
Ziverts lost the first set 2-6 but rebounded 6-1 in the second set to force a third which he won 6-4. This marks Ziverts’ second appearance at the Singles Championships and his first win ever at the individual tournament.
No. 53 Strom and No. 12 Fomba played long and aggressive rallies that saw TCU walk away with the win. Strom fell 2-6 in the first set, and the second set was back-and-forth games before Fomba won a deuce point that put him ahead 5-4 and then took all four points in the final game to win the second set 6-4.
This is Strom’s second consecutive appearance at the Singles Championships and his second time being knocked out in the first round.
Ziverts will play No. 6 August Holmgren (USD) tomorrow in round two of the individual tournament. He defeated Holmgren in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 during the regular season.
