Haley Giavara won her NCAA opener to advance to Tuesday’s round of 32.
URBANA, Ill. – California women’s tennis star Haley Giavara defeated Oklahoma State’s Lisa Marie Rioux in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship on Monday. But Jessica Alsola’s season came to an end when the Cal freshman lost to Duke’s Chloe Beck
The 63rd-ranked Giavara beat the 20th-ranked Rioux, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Giavara, a junior from San Diego with a 17-14 record, advances to play Oklahoma’s 10th-ranked and Nos. 9-16 seeded Layne Sleeth in the round of 32 on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. CT.
Alsola, ranked 71st, lost to the ninth-ranked and Nos. 9-16 seeded Beck, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. She ends her year with a 32-10 record, with the Fresno product leading the Bears in singles wins.
