ANN ARBOR, Mich. – All eight members of the Wisconsin men’s tennis team head to the University of Michigan campus to compete in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. Players will partake in the men’s open singles and doubles events, and the tournament will run from Thursday through Monday.
Here are five things to know before the tournament begins.
1. SWITCHING UP THE PAIRS: Wisconsin will be trying out some new doubles pairs as it competes in the team’s fourth tournament of the fall season. Most notably, the duo of Michael Minasyan and Gabriel Huber will be split with each of them playing with a freshman partner. Minasyan will be competing alongside Tomas Zlatohlavek while Huber will be paired up with Oliver Olsson. In addition, Jason Hildebrandt and Mihailo Popovic will be competing in the doubles events together. Popovic has previously played in doubles matches this season with Collin Beduhn and Oliver Olsson at the SEC/Big Ten Challenge.
2. HILDEBRANDT’S SEASON DEBUT: The ITA Midwest Regional Championships will mark the first tournament of the season that grad student Jason Hildebrandt will participate in. The last time Hildebrandt played was in the Badgers’ final regular season matchup of the 2022-23 season with Nebraska on April 22, 2023. Last season, the graduate senior posted a 5-8 overall singles record and a 13-4 overall doubles record. He was previously paired with Badger alumni Jared Pratt at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
3. PAST ITA MIDWEST REGIONALS: The last time the Badgers competed in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships was in 2022. The team of Gabriel Huber and Michael Minasyan won the regional doubles title while over the course of four days, the Badgers earned 14 total wins as a team. Mihailo Popvic and Jared Pratt led the way in singles, both making it to the round of 16.
