KNOXVILLE, Tenn. –The Tennessee women’s tennis team concluded day two at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships with a perfect 15-0 record. The team combined for 13 singles wins and tallied a pair of doubles victories.
The Big Orange started the morning by notching two wins in doubles play. Alana Wolfberg and Catherine Aulia took down Kentucky’s Elziabeth Stevens and Makayla Mills in an 8-4 victory. Also adding a win in doubles were Esther Adeshina and Sofia Cabezas. The pair recorded an 8-6 win over Vanderbilts’s Bridget Stammel and Sonya Macavei.
“The girls did an amazing job today, I am very proud of them,” said Associate Head Coach Matias Marin. “We competed really well the entire day and we were physically and mentally tough when it mattered the most. We are making great progress this fall and continue to improve. Tomorrow is another opportunity to compete again as we get deeper into the tournament.”
In singles action, the Lady Vols captured a 13-0 sweep on the day. Six members of the team tallied two wins apiece and will advance to the next round of singles play.
Sofia Cabezas got into a groove early and was able to roll past Kentucky’s Makayla Mills with two 6-1 wins. Later in the day, Cabezas played Fernanda Carvajal from ETSU and defeated her 6-2, 7-5.
“I am feeling very confident and very good,” said Cabezas after her win. “It was a good match even though the score was 6-1, 6-1. It was a tough match and I stayed solid through the whole match so I am very happy with my performance.”
Tennessee returns to the courts tomorrow for the third day of main draw play. Doubles start at 9 a.m. ET and two rounds of singles play will follow at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
