STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Candela Aparisi and junior Sophie Luescher, along with two doubles teams, all advanced to the rounds of 32 on the first day of the ITA Northwest Regionals at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
Both Aparisi and Luescher won two singles matches Friday to advance through to the third round of the annual four-day event. The two were also part of two advancing doubles teams, as Aparisi was partnered with Karin Young and Luescher with Uxia Martinez Moral.
Luescher and Martinez Moral, ranked as the nation’s No. 56 doubles tandem, took down Alaia Rubio Perez and Nadine Arbaizar Martinez from Portland, 8-2. Aparisi and Young hung on to defeat San Jose State’s, 8-6, to advance to play Saturday.
After playing doubles in the morning, Aparisi and Luescher won consecutive matches to advance through the singles bracket to the round of 32. Aparisi began with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Portland State’s Madison Egan before needing a third-set tiebreak to get past Fresno State’s Carolina Piferi, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3).
Luescher advanced to the singles round of 32 at the ITA Regionals for the third straight year with a pair of straight-set victories. She first ousted Maria Antonova from Santa Clara, 6-3, 6-3, before beating Portland’s Nadine Arbaizar Martinez, 6-1, 6-2
Luescher improves her fall singles record to 5-0 to go with a 4-0 doubles mark.
Sophomore Jo-Yee Chan and fifth-year senior Nina Geissler each earned straight-set wins in their opening-round singles matches before falling in the second round. Chan defeated PSU’s Nika Beukers 6-2, 6-3, before dropping a tough three-set decision to Astrid Olsen of Washington, 4-6, 6-0, 7-5.
Geissler eased by the Viking’s Momoko Yoshimura, 6-2, 6-1, and later fell to UW’s Erika Matsuda, 6-3, 6-3. Four of the seven Ducks competing in singles won their first-round matchups.
Tilde Jagare and Olivia Symons, both making their Oregon debuts, suffered an 8-2 doubles loss to Portland’s Rimona Rouf and Aleksandra Dimitrijevic in the first round. Cal Poly’s pair of Melissa LaMette and Romane Mosse needed a tiebreaker to defeat the Duck duo of Chan and Geissler, 8-7 (3)
