Kimchi Advances in Qualifying Round on Day Three of ITA All-American

CARY, N.C. – Duke women’s tennis freshman Shavit Kimchi advanced to the round of 64 in the qualifying round at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships on Monday, after registering a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win over 29th-ranked Nicole Khirin of Texas.

The rookie faces NC State’s Sophie Abrams in her next match on Tuesday at 9 a.m., at the Cary Tennis Park.

The win marked Kimchi’s third victory over a top-30 opponent, after defeating 17th-ranked Elza Tomase (Tennessee) and 27th-ranked Sydni Ratliff (Ohio State) in three-set battles earlier this fall.

Joining her in singles play, 36th-ranked Emma Jackson was competitive with Georgia’s Mai Nirundom, but dropped in a 6-2, 6-3, decision. Jackson will battle 49th-ranked Sofiya Chekhlystova of Penn State in the consolation bracket on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m.

The Blue Devil tandem of Kimchi and junior Ellie Coleman opened action in the qualifying round of doubles with a strong 8-6 victory over 27th-ranked Carly Briggs and Rachel Gailis of Florida. The pair advanced to face Georgia’s Dasha Vidmanova and Aysegul Mert in the round of 32, but fell in a tight contest, 8-6.

Also in doubles, Duke’s 48th-ranked duo of Jackson and senior Karolina Berankova defeated Arizona’s Brandelyn Fulgenzi and Reece Carter, 8-5, in their opening match, before falling to Destinee Martins and Isabel Pascual, 8-5.
