Tulsa, Okla.—Peter Murphy and Will Peters of the University of North Carolina men’s tennis team both won a pair of matches on Saturday with the opening of the Prequalifying Draw of the 2023 ITA All-American Championships hosted by the ITA and University of Tulsa.
Murphy and Peters both won matches in the Round of 256 and Round of 128, advancing into Sunday’s Round of 64 action.
Murphy beat Ronit Hiryur of Dayton in three sets in the opening round, dropping the first frame in a tiebreaker before roaring back to win the final two sets, 6-2, 6-1. In the Round of 128, Murphy beat Tennessee State’s Taj Hibbert, 6-4, 6-1. He will meet Indiana’s Sam Landau in the Round of 64 on Sunday morning.
Meanwhile, Peters won both of his matches in straight sets on Saturday. In the Round of 256, he swept Arizona State’s Daniel Phillips, 6-4, 6-2. In the next round, he topped Arkansas’ Benedikt Emesz, 6-3, 7-5. Peters will meet Alex Chang of California on Sunday morning in the Round of 64.
