The 2022-23 Bears added ITA academic awards to the Pac-12 honor roll accolades they also collected this week.
BERKELEY – The California women’s tennis team added to its academic award haul this week, when the Blue & Gold was named an ITA All-Academic team and eight Golden Bears were lauded as ITA Scholar-Athletes. The Bears earning the latter honors were Jessica Alsola, Cami Brown, Haley Giavara, Berta Passola Folch, Erin Richardson, Makenna Thiel, Hannah Viller Moeller and Katja Wiersholm.
A student-athlete needs to compile a grade-point average of 3.5 or above to claim ITA Scholar-Athlete status, while a team needs to have a GPA or 3.2 or above to become an ITA All-Academic Team.
Richardson, who graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in economics, was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete for the fourth consecutive year. Giavara, who graduated in May with degrees in legal studies and sociology, along with rising seniors Brown and Viller Moeller each garnered the honor for the third time. Rising juniors Alsola, Thiel and Wiersholm each collected the award for the second time, while Passola Folch, who joined the Bears in the spring, was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete for the first time.
The 2022-23 season was another banner year for head coach Amanda Augustus‘ squad in the classroom, as it also earned the Golden Bear Team Award for posting the top team GPA at Cal, placed eight Bears (Alsola, Brown, Giavara, Richardson, Thiel, Viller Moeller, Wiersholm and Valentina Ivanov) on the Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll, and, in the fall, picked up the Newmark Award for producing the top GPA in the women’s small team category in the previous year.
