LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The No. 26 USC women’s tennis team came up just short against No. 19 UCLA Friday afternoon, falling 4-3 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Bruins scored the first point of the match with a victory in doubles. On court three, Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer and Fangran Tian defeated Isabelle Lee and McKenna Koenig 6-2, before No. 6 Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle defeated No. 39 Naomi Cheong and Snow Han 6-3. On court two, Emma Charney and Nathalie Rodilosso were trailing 5-4 when play paused.
Charney took back the momentum for the Trojans in singles play, defeating Ava Catanzarite 6-0, 6-2 to even the score at 1-1. The Bruins scored the next two points, with Cheong losing 6-3, 6-2 on court four and No. 8 Maddy Sieg losing her first match of the season on court one, 6-4, 6-3. Sloane Morra scored next for the Trojans, defeating Lutkemeyer 6-3, 6-4 to bring the Trojans within one, before Grace Piper tied the score with her victory over Sasha Vagramov on court five. On court two, No. 106 Hance barely edged out Han 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to secure the victory for the Bruins.
With the loss, the Trojans fall to 15-8 and 6-4 in conference play. The Trojans will wrap up regular season play on Saturday when they take on the University of Hawaii before heading to Ojai for the Pac-12 tournament next week. The match against Hawaii will kick-off at 10 a.m. at Marks Stadium.
