Duke Sweeps Weekend After 6-1 Victory at Georgia Tech

ATLANTA, Ga. – Fifteenth-ranked Duke men’s tennis defeated No. 68 Georgia Tech, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at Ken Byers Tennis Complex
 
The Blue Devils’ 13th win of the year and second consecutive victory was highlighted by two wins over ranked opponents in singles action and one in doubles play. Duke shifts to 13-5 overall and 6-1 in the ACC, while the Yellowjackets fall to 11-9 and 2-4, respectively.
 
For the second-straight match, junior Faris Khan secured the win for Duke when he beat Robert Bauer 6-1, 7-5 on court six.

How It Happened

• No. 54 Michael Heller and Andrew Zhang began doubles action with a 6-4 victory over Keshav Chopra and Rohan Sachdev on court two.
• Then on the top court, No. 71 Garrett Johns and Pedro Rodenas upended No. 20 Andres Martin and Marcus McDaniel, 7-6 (5), to clinch the doubles point for Duke.
• The doubles match between Connor Krug and Teddy Truwit against Brandon McKinney and Elias Shokry on court three went unfinished with the teams tied at 6-6 (5-5).
• Duke quickly increased its lead to 2-0 in singles play when Connor Krug bested Sachdev on court four 6-4, 6-3.
• The Yellowjackets would not go away though, cutting the edge down to 2-1 after No. 34 Martin defeated No. 17 Johns 6-3, 6-2 on the main court.
• The match on court three was the next to finish with No. 98 Rodenas earning his third win over a ranked opponent when he posted a 7-5, 6-4 victory over No. 60 McDaniel.
• Khan then clinched the win for Duke on court six to give the visitors a 4-1 lead.
• Jake Krug followed that up with a three-set win on court five over Shokry. Jake Krug dropped a 6-3 decision in the opening set before bouncing back for 6-2, 6-2 victories in the second and third to earn the win.
• The final match on court three was decided in three sets with Zhang pulling off the upset win over No. 86 Chopra. Zhang recorded a 6-3 in the first frame before falling 7-5 in the second. Fortunately, the Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native rebounded for the 10-8 super tiebreak win to register his second win over a ranked opponent this season.
