SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The University of Michigan women’s tennis team won nine singles matches and a pair of doubles matches at the rain-plagued Puerto Rico Invitational, scheduled for Friday through Sunday Oct. 28-30. Saturday’s (Oct. 29) second day of competition was interrupted due to rain, with the final day (Oct. 30) canceled.

The first day of action featured two rounds of singles action for the Wolverines, who faced players from Vanderbilt, Florida State, Wisconsin and Auburn.

Michigan picked up eight singles wins on Friday (Oct. 28), led by Julia Fliegner‘s 2-0 mark. Kari Miller, Gala Mesochoritou, Merri Kelly, Andrea Cerdan and Bayley Sheinin, who each picked up wins over the course of the first day as U-M finished with an 8-5 singles record.

The second day was marred by rain, as U-M finished just four of its seven singles matches against Florida State. Miller grabbed U-M’s lone singles win on the day, getting a straight-set win over Mila Saric as the final three matches on court were stopped due to rain.

On the doubles court, Michigan went 2-1 against Vanderbilt in the only doubles action of the tournament. Cerdan and Kelly, who teamed up to reach the quarterfinals of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, got a 6-2 win over Annessa Lee and Bridget Stammel. Nicole Hammond and Sheinin accounted for Michigan’s other win on the day with a 6-1 victory.

The Wolverines were unable to compete on the final day of competition due to wet courts and rain. The team spent the final day sightseeing, which included a stop in Old San Juan.

U-M is approaching the end of its fall season, with this upcoming weekend marking the final competitions for the Maize and Blue. U-M will be in action at both the ITA Fall National Championships next Thursday though Sunday (Nov. 3-6) in San Diego, Calif., and the ASU Invite, Friday through Sunday (Nov. 4-6) in Tempe, Ariz., to complete the fall slate.
