BATON ROUGE, La. – Mississippi State women’s tennis had another dominating day in singles at the ITA Southern Regional on Saturday.
The Bulldogs recorded four singles wins and one doubles win during the event hosted by Louisiana State University.
“We had another long day of competition today,” head coach Daryl Greenan said. “In spite of some inevitable ups and downs I thought our level was solid overall. Everyone is gaining valuable experience here and we just have to build off that.”
In round two of singles, Gia Cohen earned her second win of the tournament with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Maggie White of UAB. Emmanouela Antonaki followed suit with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Olga Bienzobas of Louisiana Tech.
Alexandra Mikhailuk earned the Bulldogs their third win of the day over UAB’s Adela Wasserbauerova. Mikhailuk dropped the first 4-6, but battled back to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-4.
In round three of singles, Antonaki faced her own teammate Mikhailuk. Antonaki took the match 6-1, 6-3. Cohen faced Kaitlyn Carnicella of Auburn. Cohen took the first set 6-4, but ultimately fell 7-5, 6-1 in the last two sets.
In doubles, Antonaki and Cohen took on Sydney Clarke and Maggie White. The MSU duo took the match 8-7 (1) to earn their second doubles win of the tournament.
The MSU tandem of Mikhailuk and Rizzolo dropped their doubles match 8-5 to LSU’s duo of Safiya Carrington and Nina Geissler.
The quarterfinals will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT, while doubles will begin at 1 p.m. Antonaki will take part in the singles quarterfinals, while in doubles the MSU tandem of Cohen and Antonaki will take part in the doubles quarterfinals.
