Women’s Tennis Wraps Up Competitive Weekend at Wildcat Invite


EVANSTON, Ill. – Michigan State women’s tennis completed play at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center on the campus of Northwestern University Sunday afternoon, as the Spartans joined a seven-team field and took home 10 overall victories at the 2022 Wildcat Invite.
 
MSU sent seven student-athletes to the event, including junior Ayshe Can, graduate Nicole Conard, freshman Makenna Martinez, freshman Juliette Nask, junior Marlo Schiffman, sophomore Liisa Vehvilainen and senior Dagmar Zdrubecka. The Spartans faced off against competitors from host-Northwestern, Marquette, Kansas, Iowa State, USF and Chicago State.
 
Vehvilainen led the way with four overall victories on the weekend, highlighted by a pair of wins in both singles and doubles play. The Turku, Finland, native cruised by Northwestern’s Briana Crowley in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, before overcoming a difficult loss in the opening set to defeat Silvia Maria Costache of Kansas by a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 score. In doubles play, Vehvilainen teamed up with Can to defeat Chie Kezuka and Anna Supapitch Kuearum of Iowa State by a 6-3 margin. The tandem completed the tournament with a hard-fought 7-5 win over Kansas’ Costache and Carmen Roxana Manu.
 
The MSU pairing of Conard and Nask battled together over the weekend, publishing a 6-4 win over the USF pairing of Sierra Berry and Grace Schumacher. Conard added a pair of singles wins as well, dismantling USF’s Kiana Mokhtari by a 6-3, 6-0 score before earning yet another straight-set result over Marquette’s Emma Davis, 6-4, 6-3. Nask took home her first career singles victory, notching an ultra-competitive 7-6, 7-6 win over Berry.
 
Schiffman booked a pair of wins of her own at the event, winning one singles match and taking home a doubles win as a part of a combination team with Ethel Li of Chicago State. Li and Schiffman teamed up and took down Marquette challengers Emma Davis and Elizabeth Ferdman, 6-1. Schiffman followed that effort up with her first singles win of the 2022-23 campaign, dispatching with Ferdman by a dominant 6-3, 6-0 edge.
